The Schulke family is kind. From buying others breakfast to writing thank-you notes to the mailman, every member of the Schulke family has taken the message “Be UD Kind” to heart.

During Random Acts of Kindness week, Michelle Schulke printed four “Be UD Kind” cards from the University of Dayton website for each member of her family, including her five children.

“When they do an act of kindness, they hand the card to the person and they say ‘Hey, this was started by UD,’” Schulke said.

Schulke and her husband, Sean, set an example by doing random acts of kindness for strangers in the community.

“My husband and I went to Speedway and redeemed our Speedy points and got random things,” she said. “We gave them to different people at Speedway and each time we gave the ‘Be UD Kind’ card as well, hoping they pay it forward.”

Schulke said one of the most rewarding things about the experience has been seeing others pay the acts of kindness forward.

“I bought lunch for a coworker,” she said. “She later went home, cooked dinner for her family and cooked dinner for our boss who has been really sick and drove it to his house.”

Schulke said the word about UD’s campaign is starting to spread throughout the Dayton area.

“People can see that this was started at UD but it is spreading through the community,” she said. “It starts there but you have people in Huber Heights participating and people in downtown. It shows this university is thinking about our community.”

Schulke, who did not attend UD but has been a fan of Flyer basketball her whole life, was excited to participate in the campaign.

“I think it is just a wonderful school,” she said. “I thought it was a great idea and I wanted my kids to take part in it.

One of the most memorable experiences Schulke had during the Random Acts of Kindness week was when she handed a coupon for a free piece of pizza to a stranger at Speedway.

“She teared up,” Schulke said. “She said no one ever does that.”

Schulke responded to the woman, “Be UD Kind.”
