“Who better to kick off the month than our own president, Dr. Dan Curran.”
Jordan Stuckey ’13, president of Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow, introduced Curran to the audience overflowing Torch Lounge on Jan. 30. February is “I Love UD” month, “a monthlong expression of our devotion to our University and our community,” said Curran.
The campaign will involve four weeks of activities. Next week a porch sheet contest will be held, but the celebration doesn’t stop on campus. Week two involves a focus on athletics, week three is a call to action to participate in acts of kindness and week four asks for everyone to share their UD story. Daily social media interaction on the University’s Facebook and Twitter pages will showcase reasons why people – current students on campus and alumni and friends across the globe – love UD.
There is a goal: 100 people per day over the month of February make a donation to UD. But it’s not about a dollar limit; Curran explained that the campaign is about participating. “It’s to strengthen relationships and raise awareness.”
While attendees of the launch party snagged free t-shirts and filled up on chili and frosted cookies, a two minute video showed students and staff explaining why they love UD. “In two minutes we caught many reasons why people consider UD special and why we have special people at UD,” said Curran. Joe DePeder ’14 exclaimed over Red Scare. Marycrest cafeteria worker Denise Gorman confessed her love for the students. Everyone has a reason to love UD.
I found a new reason: the Flyer Pep Band, who entertained everyone with their upbeat music and dance moves in the KU lobby after Curran’s speech. Gooooooo, Dayton Flyers!
