A boy and his bicycle

He was half the size of the other bicyclists but on twice as many wheels. Three-year-old Eli Joseph joined Team UD May 17 as it won the regional Bike to Work Day team challenge, even though he had no work to bike to; instead, he biked to school.

Bike to Work Day was the culmination of the the UD bike committee’s events to celebrate National Bike Month. Other activities included rides to Second Street Market and Carillon Park and brown bag lunches on regional trails and bike maintenance.

The morning started with fog, but more than 34 bicyclists met at RecPlex to travel down the new Brown Street bike lanes en masse with a UD bike police escort. They joined the more than 575 riders at RiverScape for live music, a pancake breakfast and exhibits. The region’s participants logged 6,389 miles, saving 255 gallons of gas. Team UD had 54 riders and garnered first place in the team challenge. Lexis-Nexis was second with 23, and Sinclair Community College third with 22.

Eli, the son of Russ Joseph ’99, biked with his dad from their Sixth Street home to RiverScape for the festivities. They joined Team UD for the 2.8-mile ride from downtown to campus and the Bombeck Center, where Eli is in the Pilots classroom.

“He’s always on his bike,” said Dad, who works downtown at Dayton Municipal Court.

Team UD headed south on Saint Clair Street, then wound through the Oregon District and crossed the pedestrian bridge over U.S. 35. They traveled over cobblestone roads through South Park and toward campus. Eli, on training wheels and peddling eight times for every revolution of his adult companions, arrived at school and high-fived his police escorts.

Riders for team UD included faculty, staff and students from advancement, communications and marketing, Roesch Library, UDit, Campus Recreation, the School of Engineering, the music department, Women’s Center, health center, facilities, public safety, Kennedy Union and student life, among others.

The bike committee is planning a lunchtime group ride for July 19 on the new path that will connect UD to Kettering. Click to join the email update list.

  • UD’s Environmental Health and Safety Department conducted the annual fire pump testing at the CPC. This is to ensure the building’s water pump has the pressure it needs to get water to the sprinklers. Here, Darren Lyons of Simplex Grinnell, the assisting contractor, checks the readings on the pressure gauges as he observes the water flow during the test.
