Boxes. Boxes everywhere. There’s tape stuck to my shoes and my hands will probably smell like all-purpose cleaner for the rest of the semester. And did I mention all the boxes? As I haul everything that I own up a steep set of blue painted stairs, I curse the obnoxious humidity. Until I swing the old-as-dust door open and breathe in the hipster aroma. (‘Cause, you know, our apartment slightly resembles the set of a ’90s New York sitcom. We’re not upset about it.)
Summer 2013 at UD has been incredible. Between music festivals and mission trips, I’ve waited eagerly at my apartment on Jasper Street for my roommates and friends to arrive. As the day draws near, I simultaneously mourn for the end of blissful sunshine and spontaneous trips and celebrate the euphoric reunion that is Move-In Weekend.
Our Jasper apartment, or “The Hippie Commune,” as my roommates and I have deemed it, is perfect. It doesn’t have the convenience of Marycrest, and it’s not our good old Gardens apartment — but the second we cracked that dusty door open we knew it was home. Mostly because of the lack of community bathrooms.
Obviously, college is about learning. And I’m addicted to it. My most treasured motto is what I’ve learned over the last two Move-In Weekends: spontaneity is the key to great stories. “Why not?” is the greatest phrase in my vocabulary. I wouldn’t have met half of my friends if we didn’t go out on a limb. Learning in the classroom is why we’re here. Learning everywhere else is what we live for.
This weekend is quite possibly the greatest weekend at UD — besides St. Paddy’s Day, Parent’s Weekend, any basketball game and basically any other weekend. Textbooks are purchased, sheets are hung, jerseys are sported, porches are filled and first-years quickly dispose of their lanyards. Everyone is reunited with not just their friends, but their Flyer families as well. Yes, first-years, even you. You will discover your best friends — in awkward elevator rides, in the desk next to you and, of course, right down the hall.
I’ve had the time of my life basking in the sweet UD summer sun. But Move-In Weekend has finally arrived, my fellow Flyers, and it’s time to brace ourselves for the chaos and community that awaits us this fall.
